Mon. Library/Counseling Week: B Week

Weekly News Show: https://youtu.be/6KEB2vHjMYE

(**All classes should view and discuss our news show on Mondays together.**)

Morning Announcements: Please add things you would like to have added to our morning announcements on the appropriate day.

Nuts and Bolts Items:

-Substitutes - As you may have noticed last week, subs are becoming much more difficult to come by as we approach the end of the year. Please plan ahead if you must be out, leave detailed plans re: procedures/behaviors and highly engaging lessons. Also, be aware we'll do our best to fill it, but personal day requests may not be possible this late in the year if we aren't able to secure a substitute.

-Fundraiser - This is the last week of our fundraiser. The last mini-fridge will be given away today, but please continue to encourage our students to submit names until Friday. They are still able to get the individual prizes based on the amount of money they personally raise. Also, the more funds = the more end-of-year fun and outdoor items we’ll be able to purchase!

-MRA survey - Students will take this on Friday immediately following community time. Please take time to talk with your students about the WHY behind our survey and the importance of giving their voice. The results will be looked at by our student and staff Lighthouse teams to guide decisions for next year. There is also a segment on the weekly news to help with your discussion. Staff will take it NEXT Monday during our early out meeting time. Parent window is April 12-21 and will be emailed from the office. Feel free to communicate reminders in your weekly team communication also to encourage them to complete it!

-Team meetings: Shawnda and Stacey will be unable to attend team meetings this week due to the district meeting Tues.-Thurs. If your team needs anything at all, please reach out to either of us!

-Although Stacey and Shawnda will be out 3 days this week, we will be checking email/phone during breaks. Stacey will also be checking in after school when the training is done each day. Please feel free to reach out if needed. Otherwise, there will also be someone in the office assisting each day for immediate needs.

-Poetry Month - If you haven’t already, plan to build time for your students to participate in the poetry scavenger hunt. It’s a great way to encourage fluency and the students are really enjoying it! This is a great thing to do on your team’s library day.

-Water fountains - I received notice last week that our water fountains will likely become accessible again soon for drinking. Our custodians will take extra steps with cleaning. Please also have a conversation with your class when this happens re: expectations to ensure we are using them safely and immediately put our masks back on. As always, our primary recommendation is to continue using the bottle fillers.

Adult Learning Weekly Blog Spot from Mrs. Maddeaux:

This week, we are hearing from our TEACHER OF THE YEAR, Samantha Muller! When I was heading to interview her, Logan Ndiba asked if he could do the interview, and I've got to say, he did a MUCH better job of it than I would have! If you see him, give him props! On our Hidden Talents form, I heard she was very good at keeping her class quiet, so the first question Logan asked was how she disciplines her class. Sam said she doesn't like the word "discipline" anymore because it sounds too much like "punishment". She said she prefers to have conversations about expectations and the consequences of crossing those boundaries. She said she used to be a yelling type of teacher, but training through CHAMPS and Conscious Discipline has really helped her understand that behavior is not a personal attack and she feels better equipped to handle those conversations. Logan then asked her how the kids feel in this environment. Sam said they seem to like it. When everything is going well, it feels good and more gets done. When they can do more, they can be proud of what they've accomplished and that pride leads to better behavior. Sam said she used to be mean, but she has learned that yelling just makes it worse and now she makes an effort to talk it out every single time when a boundary is crossed (she also reminds them of clear, consistent expectations often). She said it is exhausting, but so was constantly fighting the kids, and this is a good, productive exhaustion rather than a worn out, defeated feeling. Sam said she was surprised but honored to be chosen as Teacher of the Year, and now we know a little bit behind her secrets of success!

Remember to nominate your friends for their Hidden Talents on this form. I won't interview anyone that doesn't want to be featured (although I didn't give Sam a choice! Teacher of the Year and all).

With your accountability partners, let's work on gratitude for the good things that we have accomplished this year. I have some Sunburst Gratitude worksheets that we can use to list all of the parts of the school year that have made us happy!

Leader in Me Learning Opportunity:

In case you haven’t heard yet - I am so excited to share that the original Leader in Me school, A.B. Combs Elementary School, led by THE Muriel Summers, will be sharing their Virtual Leadership Day on April 21 from 8:00-11:00 am. This will be an amazing opportunity! You may register here to attend the live event and also receive a replay link to watch it at a later time too.

As many of you know, our WIS Lighthouse students were able to attend Willard Central’s Leadership Day last Friday and came back very fired up about all the potential greatness we could do here! We have had so much growth this year, but also been limited due to COVID. Talk to your Lighthouse students about their experience and check out this neat opportunity to see the potential of Leader in Me showcased! I encourage you to watch it with your students, team, or maybe we could even have a watch party as a building too?!?!
