Adult Learning Weekly Blog Spot from Mrs. Maddeaux:

This week we are featuring a battle of the Jennifers! Walker vs. Bartels. We are going to find out who is the bigger Harry Potter fan! My informal staff poll leans toward Bartels, but popular opinion is that neither would stand a chance if LaVonna was still here (and named Jennifer!). We started with some basic questions about how much and why they love Harry Potter. Walker grew up with the characters and particularly identified with Hermione and her growth. She said it is the only fantasy story that she reads. Bartels, on the other hand, loves the story, the magic, the creatures... just the whole world building, fantasy, aspect of the story. Both prefer the books over the movies, but said that they watch the movies often. Walker reads the whole series every 2 years or so, Bartels said once a year, but Walker said she also reads a lot of fan fiction related to the story. When I asked them what makes them a bigger fan than the other Jennifer, Walker said she knows a lot of obscure information and quite a bit of backstory because she reads so much fan fiction. Bartels thinks she's the bigger fan because she has all the swag. She has her own wand, Luna Lovegood cosplay, regulation robes... plus she runs in a Harry Potter themed running club. Bartels is all in!

But it comes down to the trivia. I asked each of them a series of progressively harder questions. Walker was sure that she blew it when she couldn't remember what Dumbledore's tattoo was a map of, but she knew that Wolfsbane and Monkswood are also known as Aconite. Bartels had no problem naming the sweet shop at Hogsmeade (HoneyDukes), but, surprisingly, she struggled with most of the trivia!

Our trivia/Harry Potter Queen has been dethroned! The CLEAR winner in all things Harry Potter was Jennifer Walker! Even Walker was sure Bartels would win, but Walker clearly knew more obscure details (although neither of them knew how many staircases there are in Hogwarts!) To be fair, Walker was interviewed without interruption in their office, while Bartels was dealing with morning kids in the classroom, but the numbers don't lie! Walker is the winner! Be sure to congratulate her on the accomplishment!

With your Accountability Partner this week, talk about some of your favorite stories. Are you a Harry Potter fan? Maybe more of a Stranger Things kind of person? Bridgerton? (Is that what it's called?) Sherlock Holmes? How do you spend your productive free time, and what makes that activity a valuable use of your free time?
