Adult Learning Weekly Blog Spot:
As promised, this week I have a resource on discipline. This is a chapter of a text, so it is fairly long, but it is worth at the very least skimming through (page 5/6, 8/9, and 11/12 are the good stuff). This chapter deals with discipline and poverty. Have you ever considered the demographics of our building in relation to our discipline practices? We have over half our students living below the poverty level according to our free/reduced lunch numbers. Poverty has its own culture, and sometimes, when we aren't aware of that culture it is like talking in a foreign language. Comprenez-vous? J'écris mon post en français, vous ne comprenez pas.... and it wouldn't do much to address the issues.
I don't expect that you will have read through this whole chapter by the time you meet with your accountability partner, but during accountability time today, take a minute to check in about ways you culturally address the discipline issues in your classroom. Maybe your accountability partner has a different perspective on how to address issues.
I'll also take a second to plug our Team Self Care push this month! Please PLEASE stop by one of our mindfulness stations this week! We've added prayer after school in Tree's room, and now after school yoga with Tutton and Muller on Navy team on Wednesdays! I hope you enjoyed the Friday cart! Tickets can be dropped in the gift bag in the lounge.
