Nuts and Bolts Items:
-National Children’s Dental Month - Each homeroom class needs to show the appropriate grade level video below between the dates of Feb. 8-19. Please add your viewing date to this document and Nurse Danielle will make sure your class has their ‘goodie bag’ of educational material to send home that day. Each video is less than 5 minutes long.
-Team meetings this week: Reading goal check-in
-School Board Appreciation Week is Feb. 15. We’d really appreciate it if your team would like to create a poster or video, write letters, etc. to send our thanks from WIS. Please let me know if your class/team is doing something!
-6th grade teachers: As soon as I have more information regarding the announcement to students of band instrument placement I will let you know! It had tentatively been scheduled for Wed., but not sure if that has changed a little due to our deadline extension to turn in choices last week.
Adult Learning Weekly Blog Spot from Mrs. Maddeaux:
In honor of Black History Month, this week I wanted to talk about diversity. Hey, I heard that groan! I know we all feel like we do a pretty good job with this, honoring diversity was our highest score on our MRA teacher survey, but I want to share some insight that I gained when I took my class on cultural diversity for my degree program. My resource this week is a paper that I wrote after interviewing a couple of friends, one of which many of you will recognize, even though the names are changed. These interviews really opened my eyes to the reality of what some of our culturally diverse students go through. I also came to realize that cultural diversity is not simply a race thing. By the end of the class, I had made the connection that special education is also a "culture" with its own commonalities and diverse needs. This is a very vulnerable share. There is a lot about myself in this paper as I analyze my thoughts on the interviews, but I think the process is an important learning opportunity, so I hope you can all benefit from my experience, and use this as a chance to critically evaluate your own responses to and understanding of cultural differences. I have plenty more resources if you are interested in exploring further.
For accountability partner time, we will not critique my essay (please!)! Instead, we are going to have a Black History scavenger hunt around the building. Be on time so we can go over the rules of the game! This will be something that will be available all week as an activity you could also do with your students!
